Old sculpture sketch in white Carrara marble
Interesting old sketch in white Carrara marble from a sculpture workshop in Carrara. The sketch served as the basis for the copies. This is the reduction of Michelangelo's Pietà known as the Vatican Pietà. The measurements of the small statue are 45 X 38 X 10 cm. In addition to the above there are two pieces, one behind the sculpture measuring 51X42X3 cm and one underneath as a base measuring 48X15X10cm.
Michelangelo's Pietà is a marble sculpture created by Michelangelo Buonarroti and preserved in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
Dating between 1497 and 1499, the Pietà is considered the first masterpiece of the artist, then in his early twenties, as well as one of the greatest works of art that the West has ever produced; it is also the only one that bears the author's signature on the shoulder band that holds the Virgin's mantle (MICHAEL.A[N]GELVS BONAROTVS FLORENT[INVS] FACIEBAT, "The Florentine Michelangelo Buonarroti did it").
